This is a brief, but clear description of something I think can be missed about promotions.
I think people can over-index on “reliability” to mean “I’ll just deliver what I’m asked”, which is not wrong.
The challenge for us all is to “deliver what we promise” while also “delivering the right thing”, which is also a function of your skills and knowledge of the problem space.
Taking courses and reading books will teach you new things. You must accept the chance of failure when trying those things out, but you must try them out, or you’ll never really learn.
And the nuance described here allows you to work in the right direction.
